Harris' son had been integrated into the business. The publisher name transformed from "J. Harris" to "Harris & Son"; they continued to publish from the corner of St. Paul's Churchyard. Just like Tuer, Harris can be seen placing advertisements within his work, as we find in [[Dame Partlet's Farm->16 - Dame Partlet's Farm]]: <blockquote>At Harris's, St Paul's Church-yard, Good children meet a sure reward; In coming home the other day I heard a little master say, For every penny there he took, He had receiv'd a little book, With covers neat, and cuts so pretty, There's not its like in all the city; And that for twopence he could buy A story-book would make one cry; For little more a book of riddles: Then let us not buy drums or fiddles, Nor yet be stopt at pastry-cooks, But spend our money all in books; For when we've learnt each book by heart Mamma will treat us with a tart. [[View selected texts now?->View Selected Texts]]]] Return to the [[List of publishers?->Publisher]]According to a lecture given at the Toronto Public Library on April 30, 1992 by Lawrence Darton (whose relation, if it exists, was never disclosed,) William Darton was born in 1755 in Tottenham. As a teenager, he apprenticed under an engraver in the City of London for seven years, but returned to Tottenham where he managed a general store. This venture eventually failed, and at the age of 32, he returned to London and began publishing; though, as Lawrence Darton suggests, he began by advertising himself specifically as an engraver, stationer and printer, presumably branching out into publishing in the years that would follow (1). The earliest published children's works by William Darton were two books and a jigsaw puzzle, under which he gave the address "White Lion Alley, Birchin Lane." Lawrence Darton describes a gap of "about eight or nine years" (2) before he moved to 55 Gracechurch Street, from which all of the children's books attributed to Darton in //Pages and Pictures// were printed. He took on a partner by the name of Joseph Harvey at this time, who, according to Lawrence Darton, was "mainly concerned with the printing side of the business." Both William Darton and Joseph Harvey were Quakers and were eager to write and publish material which contained moralistic and humanitarian lessons. In 1810, William Darton's son was promoted from an apprentice to a partner. In an illustration from "[[Little Jack of All Trades->37 - The Brazier (illustration)]]," the publisher's name is listed as Darton, Harvey, and Darton. Lawrence Darton mentions that William Darton Sr. retired during 1810 and moved from 55 Gracechurch to Plaistow, a small village east of London, while remaining as a partner in the firm (6). He passed away in 1819; his son continued his work as a publisher without Joseph Harvey at 58 Holborn Hill (6).
